Award-winning and Grammy-nominated violinist Peter Herresthal has performed with orchestras and ensembles worldwide, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Thomas Adès at the Melbourne Festival), the Vienna Radio Symphony at the Konzerthaus Wien, the BBC Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony, the London Sinfonietta, and numerous major Scandinavian orchestras such as the Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm Philharmonic.
Herresthal has recorded 22 violin concertos, earning ten nominations and five Norwegian *Spellemannprisen* awards. His recording of Per Nørgård’s works was shortlisted for a Gramophone Award and received Editor’s Choice in *The Strad* and *International Record Review*.
In recent seasons, Peter has toured Europe and the United States with Kaija Saariaho’s aria *"Vers toi qui es si loin"*, written specifically for him, and has performed her violin concerto *"Graal Théâtre"* over 30 times. His recording of the concerto for BIS received glowing reviews in *BBC Music Magazine* and *Gramophone*, alongside a TV production for the BBC and a nomination for a US Grammy Award. Saariaho and Aleksi Barrière also created a special version of *"Graal Théâtre (not a Knight)"* for Peter, incorporating an actor, video, and text, which premiered at the Bergen Festival and with the Oslo Philharmonic, followed by performances in Norway, Finland, and France.
His latest recording of Missy Mazzoli’s violin concerto earned two Grammy nominations in Los Angeles in 2024 and was nominated for the BBC Classical Music Awards.
Throughout his career, Peter has collaborated closely with renowned composers such as Harrison Birtwistle and Henri Dutilleux on their concertos. Many international and Nordic composers have written works for him, including Thomas Adès, Kaija Saariaho, Per Nørgård, Missy Mazzoli, Arne Nordheim, Olav Anton Thommessen, Gisle Kverndokk, Henrik Hellstenius, Jon Øyvind Ness, Nils Henrik Asheim, Rolf Wallin, and Ørjan Matre.
In 2023, Peter retired from performing to focus on teaching. He currently serves as a professor at the Oslo Academy and the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Peter is also visiting professor at the Royal College of Music in London, Ingesund College, and NYU Steinhardt School in New York.
